JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) Members of the York College women's basketball program spent September 18 volunteering on campus at the York College Blood Drive, helping the New York Blood Center receive 96 donations. In doing so, York demonstrated how sport positively affects the communities in which we work, play and live in by actively participating in the 2019 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Day of Service. Last year, more than 250 women's basketball programs performed service projects as part of WBCA Day of Service.
"Providing service to our community is a vital part of our culture," said York College head women's basketball coach Anastasia Bitis. "It creates awareness to issues around us and it helps us understand that we can be part of the solution. Lending a hand whenever possible allows us to be selfless and provides us with a sense of accomplishment toward something that is bigger than ourselves."
The contributions of the Cardinal student-athletes directly impacted 288 lives by actively recruiting donors on campus. York student-athletes also welcomed donors upon arrival, assisted with registration, escorting donors from the donor bed to canteen/refreshment tables as well as serving snacks and refreshments to donors.
"The York College women's basketball student-athletes were such a great help throughout the blood drive," said New York Blood Center manager for business development Yadira Navarro. "They should be more than proud of their work which will literally save lives in our community. On behalf of the New York Blood Center and the patients we serve, thank you Cardinals!"
