Recreation Rules & Regulations

The following facilities are available to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni of York College during specified hours with proper York College identification. Recreation Schedules are available prior to the start of each semester and reflect the normal hours of operation. A copy of the schedule can be obtained at the Recreation and Intramural Office in HPE Room P109B, or by visiting our website

Recreation Rules
  1. Valid York ID must be presented to recreation staff in order to use the recreational facilities. ID will be held until completion of workout.
  2. Proper attire must be worn at all times: Gymnasium – tee shirt, shorts or sweatpants and sneakers. Swimming Pool - Nylon or Lycra swimsuits only (no basketball shorts or cut-offs).
  3. No Outside food or drink is permitted in the recreation facilities.
  4. Lockers are available on the lower levels and are for Daily-Use only. No books, coats, bags, or other personal belongings are permitted to be left in the recreational spaces.
  5. Clothes are to be changed in community locker rooms only or faculty locker rooms as assigned.
  6. All participants must adhere to York College’s code of conduct.

Fitness Center - General Policies
To maximize your fitness experience, please adhere to the following policies

Equipment
  • Do not drop dumbbells, plates, or bars from any height.
  • Always use collars on bars when adding weights.
  • Use a spotter for free weight exercises involving the head, face, or chest.
  • Maintain a safe distance between yourself and others when using equipment.
  • Re-rack all plates and dumbbells after use.
  • Do not lean bars against walls or stand bars/dumbbells vertically on the floor.
  • Use equipment only as intended — modifications are not permitted.
  • Wipe down equipment after each use.
  • Allow others to "work in" while you rest between sets.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs to Recreation Staff immediately.
Conduct, Etiquette & Attire
  • Athletic attire is required: shirts must have full backs, and athletic shoes must be fully enclosed.
  • Towels must be used when working out.
  • No food, gum, or beverages are allowed — water only is permitted.
  • Spitting is strictly prohibited.
  • Backpacks and bags are not allowed in the Fitness Center. Store all belongings in designated lockers.
  • Maintain proper personal hygiene to ensure a pleasant environment for all.
  • Avoid wearing strong scents such as perfume, cologne, or heavily scented deodorant.
  • Show respect to fellow patrons, equipment, and Recreation Staff at all times.
  • Follow all posted policies within the Fitness Center.
  • Report any issues or concerns to Recreation Staff promptly.
Assistance
  • Report injuries, equipment issues, or facility concerns to Recreation Staff.
  • For guidance or lifting instruction, scan the QR code on the equipment or speak with a Recreation Staff member.
  • For special accommodations, please consult with Recreation Staff.
  • In case of emergency, alert the Public Safety Officer in the lobby or contact the Office of Public Safety at 718.262.2222.
Access Restriction
Access is restricted to current York College students, faculty, and staff only.

Gymnasium Guidelines
The York College Gymnasium is for the enjoyment and well-being of the entire college community. To ensure safety and respect, please follow these important guidelines:

Safety & Courtesy: These are top priorities for everyone using the gymnasium.
Scheduled Events: Academic classes, intercollegiate sports, recreation/ intramurals and special events take precedence over open gymnasium use.
Behavior: Respect others and follow all rules to keep the gymnasium safe and enjoyable. Failure to do so may result in losing gymnasium access.

Gymnasium Rules:
  • Food & Drinks: No food or drinks (except water) allowed.
  • Gym Bags: Backpacks and bags are not allowed in the Gymnasium. Store all belongings in designated lockers.
  • Proper Attire: Wear appropriate workout clothing. No street clothes allowed.
  • Gymnasium and Indoor Track Hours: Please refer to the posted schedule for open gymnasium and indoor track availability: yorkathletics.com/recschedule  
General Rules:
  • Spectators: Must stay on the court perimeter and not walk on the playing surface.
  • Priority of Use: The gymnasium and indoor track are prioritized for academic programs, athletics (practices and games), recreation, intramurals, and special events.
  • Clean Shoes: Please change or wipe off any debris from sneakers before entering.
  • Behavior: York College staff may ask visitors to leave the gymnasium if their behavior is dangerous, disruptive, or inappropriate.
  • Music Policy: Personal speakers and music devices are NOT allowed during recreational use. Please use headphones if you'd like to listen to music.
  • Flash Photography: Flash photography is not permitted during athletic contests unless you have game day credentials. Flash photography can be distracting to participants and staff, so please respect this policy.

Access Restriction
  • Academic Classes: Access is reserved for current York College students, faculty, and staff enrolled in or teaching academic classes held in the gymnasium.
  • Athletic Contests: Access is granted to current York College students, faculty, staff, alumni, and fans of both home and visiting teams.
  • Recreation: Access is limited to current York College students, faculty, and staff only.
  • Special Events: Access is granted to those attending scheduled special events, with permission or tickets as required.
