JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com)Â With the emphasis on amplifying the student-athlete experience, York College shines a weekly spotlight on a featured Cardinal to provide a look inside their bio.
Jamelia Jordan '24 takes center stage in this week's feature.
Before her York journey, Jordan attended The University of Technology, Jamaica, one of the top education institutions in the country. With the Cardinals, she has provided leadership as a member of the women's tennis and volleyball programs. Last month, Jordan was recognized as CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention, a distinction that recognizes the conference's best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well.
A three-year representative on the women's tennis team, Jordan competed in 11 singles matches and 12 doubles matches at York. She recorded her first career singles win in October 2021 at home to Baruch College. Jordan also claimed two doubles wins during the 2021 campaign, with an 8-7 triumph with partner Maria Zapata against Lehman in November.Â
Beginning her journey on the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles courts, Jordan reached the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles courts in her final two campaigns, playing six times at No. 1 doubles. Pairing with
Emperatriz Cesar, the senior took a career-best three games on the No. 1 court against Brooklyn College (Apr 18, 2023).Â
Competing at the No. 3 singles level or higher for six games in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Jordan senior took the second set of her No. 3 singles match at home to the Bulldogs (Sept. 14, 2023), ultimately losing in a tough super tiebreaker. Facing Lehman College (Sept. 27, 2023) on the No. 2 singles court, Jordan claimed a career-best four games for that court rank.Â
Not only a regular on the hard courts, Jordan played in nine matches and 27 sets for the women's volleyball team in 2022. Jordan recorded her first career assist against Purchase College (Sept. 30) and had two contests of scooping up two digs, including a four-set affair versus Medgar Evers College (Oct. 25).Â
Outside of athletics, Jordan recently graduated with an Environmental Health Science degree and is a three-time member of the CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll as well as achieving Dean's List status three times.
