JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) With the emphasis on amplifying the student-athlete experience, York College shines a weekly spotlight on a featured Cardinal to provide a look inside their bio. Jafet Gomez '24 of men's soccer takes center stage in this week's feature.

Gomez, who recently graduated York with a computer science degree, is a two-time member of the CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and has twice been named to the Dean's List.  Last month, Gomez was recognized as CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention, a distinction that recognizes the conference's best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well.

Joining the squad for the 2022 campaign, Gomez appeared in nine matches and 436 minutes. A solid contributor in defense and midfield, he started and appeared in 71 minutes in a home victory against Medgar Evers College (Oct. 15), played 56 minutes in a 3-3 draw at Pratt Institute (Oct. 29), and helped preserve a 1-0 victory against CCNY (Nov. 9).

Seeing increased playing time throughout the 2023 season, Gomez saw action in 12 contests, starting 11 and playing at least 60 minutes in every match. Stationed mainly at full-back, Gomez played a prominent role in both matches against Medgar Evers, producing a heroic defensive effort in the 2-1 road victory (Oct. 19) that gave the Cardinals their first CUNYAC win. Finishing off his career in style, Gomez tallied his first career assist Pratt (Nov. 3) after a nice cutback to goalscorer Anuar Arias.  

Overall, Gomez played in 21 games (16 starts) and 1,410 minutes as a two-year member of the program, playing an influential role in three victories and two shutouts.
