JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) With the emphasis on amplifying the student-athlete experience, York College shines a weekly spotlight on a featured Cardinal to provide a look inside their bio. Abubakar Khamis of men's tennis takes center stage in this week's feature.

Making his tennis debut last season, Khamis competed in all 10 of York's singles and doubles matches. Playing on the No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles courts, the Brooklyn native claimed three wins. Khamis claimed his first victory against Lehman College (Mar. 23) 6-3, 6-2 on the No. 6 court. He then beat Saint Elizabeth opponent Zavier Bell 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 5 level 15 days later. Khamis claimed his final triumph in an enthralling super tiebreaker 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) at Sarah Lawrence (Apr. 11). In 10 doubles encounters, the rookie played seven times on the No. 2 court and three times on the No. 3 rank. Paired up with Firdaus Abdulai on nine occasions, the pair claimed a season-high six games on the No. 3 court against Sarah Lawrence (Apr. 11). For his efforts, Khamis took home the 2023 York College Men's Tennis Newcomer of the Year laurel.

Coming into this campaign as a member of the CUNYAC Men's Tennis Preseason Player to Watch List, Khamis has competed in all five contests, on the No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles courts. Finding his feet, the Brooklyn native has won a game in two singles matches and grabbed a season-best two doubles games against John Jay (Apr. 9).
