JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball head coach Anastasia Bitis announced Friday the celebratory signing of guard Alicia Gumbs for the 2020-21 season.  Gumbs is a 5-foot-5 native of Queens who joins the Cardinals from nearby Hillcrest High School.

Gumbs, who played four years of varsity basketball at Hillcrest High School, is currently undecided in her studies at York. 

"We are very excited with the addition of Alicia to our lineup.  Our backcourt becomes much tougher as Alicia is a strong guard who is able to play inside and out" – Anastasia Bitis

At Hillcrest, Gumbs averaged 17 points per game during her senior season to rank 46th in scoring among the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) leaders.  Gumbs also shot 79.4 percent from the free-throw line (9th in PSAL) while producing 7.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest. 

Gumbs joins a York recruiting class that so far includes Bri'Anna Jones, a sophomore transfer from Nassau Community College who garnered a 2019 NJCAA All-Region XV second-team selection following a 2018-19 season in which she led the Lions to a 25-6 season to advance to the NJCAA Region XV Tournament.

York returned to the postseason for the first time since 2015-16 and advanced to the CUNYAC semifinals in a season that saw the Cardinals register the program's highest win total (11) since the 2009-10 campaign.  The Cardinals are led by returning center Mac-Dege Dessources, who was named a CUNYAC second-team All-Star following a sophomore campaign that saw her rank third in the nation in rebounds per game (13.4) and 16th in double-doubles (16).
