BOX SCORE PHOENIXVILLE, P.A.- The York College softball team took on the University of Valley Forge in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader. The Cardinals earned their first victory of the season, as they knocked off the Patriots in the first game by a score of 24-12. The Patriots would bounce back in the second game and defeat the Cardinals by a score of 26-3.
The Cardinals first win of the season came in dominating fashion, as they defeated the Patriots by 12 runs. The team jumped out to an early lead, as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning. A Nathy Reyes single drove in the first run of the game and two bases-loaded walks would give the Cardinals two more runs. Early on the Patriots showed some fight, as they scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
In the second inning, the Cardinals continued to put distance between themselves and Valley Forge as they scored five runs on another Nathy Reyes RBI single, a Nicole Ovelheira RBI single, and three bases-loaded walks. Valley Forge once again responded in the bottom of the inning by scoring three runs, making the score 8-5, keeping the game within striking distance.
The third inning is where the Cardinals would blow things wide open, as they scored seven runs on five hits and four walks. Nicole Ovelheira blasted a double, driving in Nathy Reyes. Three more RBI singles would follow from Gabriela Alvarez, Valentina Pozo, and Alyssa King. In the bottom half of the inning, Giovanna Rosado held the Patriots to just one run and the Cardinals kept a 15-6 lead.
The Cardinals managed to keep a six-run lead heading into the sixth inning and they increased that lead by scoring eight runs and putting the game away once and for all. The team drew six more walks in the inning, pushing their total to 22 for the game. Valentina Pozo had the big hit in the inning, a double that drove in three runs.
The Cardinals had 15 hits in the game; Valentina Pozo led the team with five RBI's and Dorianny Rojas drove in four. Nicole Ovelheira also had a big day at the plate, going 2-3 with three RBI's and three runs. Alyssa King drew a game-high five walks for the team and Giovanna Rosado picked up the win pitching a complete game.
For the Patriots Bailey Mayforth and Jordyn Clarke each drove in three runs.
The second game was a complete flip of the script for the two teams, as the Cardinals managed only three runs en route to a 26-3 loss. The first four innings saw the Cardinals manage only three hits and score no runs. In the fifth inning the team scored their only runs as a Nathy Reyes single drove in two runs and a Kaithlyn Taylor single drove in the final run for the team.
The Patriots took an early lead in the first, scoring six runs in the bottom of the inning. The game would be all but over after the second inning as Valley Forge scored 15 runs on just four hits, assisted largely by five errors from the Cardinals.
Nicole Ovelheira led the Cardinals with two hits in the second game and Nathy Reyes drove in a team-high two runs. Valley Forge had five players drive in three runs apiece and Lindsay LeSueur pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts.
Coming off their first win of the season, the Cardinals (1-10, 0-5 CUNYAC) will travel to Brooklyn for a CUNYAC showdown with Brooklyn College. The doubleheader will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 12th.
