JAMAICA, NY -- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) After two seasons of growth,
Ovid Cusu has resigned as York College's head women's soccer coach, effective immediately, after accepting the U13/U14 MLS NEXT head coaching position with Cedar Stars Long Island. A national search for the next leader of the Cardinals' women's soccer program is now underway.
"We thank Coach Cusu for his contributions to the women's soccer program during his time at York. We appreciate his work with our student-athletes and wish him the very best in his future endeavors," - said York College Director of Athletics Carl Christian
Cusu, who was hired in August 2024, led the program for two seasons. Under his guidance this past year, the Cardinals saw several standout performances, highlighted by a record-setting season from
Stephanie Gonzalez. The freshman led the conference with 10 goals and 21 points, set the program's single-match record with
seven goals against Keystone College (Sept. 24, 2025), and
earned CUNYAC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Conference recognition.
In addition to Gonzalez's accolades, York also garnered a pair of CUNYAC Player of the Week Honorable Mention selections and has sent Kresanta Jones (2024) and
Alisha Adams (2025) to the CUNYAC Women's Soccer Sportsmanship Team. In the classroom, the Cardinals produced one CUNYAC Vice Chancellor's Honor Roll member and a pair of Fall 2025 CUNYAC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll recipients.
Cusu recorded his first York victory with an 11-0 home triumph against Medgar Evers College (Sept. 23, 2024. The four wins in 2024 were York's most in a single season since 2016. He also produced three victories in the following campaign, including a season-finale 1-0 triumph against Yeshiva University (Nov. 4, 2025).
Cusu leaves York with a two-year record of 7-21.
