York College’s Christopher Smith takes home CUNYAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and Jonte Wallace receives the conference’s Rookie of the Week distinction

NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College (6-9, 6-2 CUNYAC) swept CUNYAC weekly honors on Monday, as senior Christopher Smith and freshman Jonte Wallace were recognized for standout performances during games played Jan. 19–25. Smith captured his first career CUNYAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week award, while Wallace continued his strong campaign by earning his third Rookie of the Week honor. The recognition marked York's first double weekly award since the 2009–10 season, when Marcel Esonwune (Player of the Week) and Shamir Wilkerson (Rookie of the Week) were honored for games played Jan. 18–24.

Coming in clutch in a 2-0 week for the Cardinals, the shifty guard averaged 22.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.5 steals per game on a cool 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field. Triumphing against Brooklyn College 81-74, Smith scored an efficient 22 points (8-of-10 FG, 6-of-7 FT), including nine points in the final five minutes, and totaled a season-high six steals. In an intense 96-94 overtime victory at John Jay (Jan. 24), the senior dropped 23 points (9-of-20 FG) to go along with eight rebounds and five steals. 

Appearing in all 15 contests, he is leading the team with 14.4 points and 2.7 steals per game to go along with his 5.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Focusing on conference matchups, Smith has upped his scoring average to 17.5 points per game while maintaining high-quality defense (3.25 steals p/game). In comparison to other CUNYAC players, on a per-game basis, the Newburgh, New York, native ranks fourth in scoring, second in steals, 11th in rebounding, and 14th in assists. 

Continuing his phenomenal run, Wallace averaged 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists on 51.3 percent (20-of-39) shooting. Facing Brooklyn College, Wallace stuffed the statsheet with a career-best 25 points (12-of-25 FG), 12 rebounds, and five assists. Helping take down John Jay College, he added 16 points (8-of-14 FG) and six rebounds. 

Through 15 games, the freshman phenom is putting up 12.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game. In conference action, Wallace has elevated his scoring output to 14.9 points. Compared to other CUNYAC players, the Brooklyn native is 13th in scoring, 10th in rebounding, and fourth in steals.

The duo returns to action Friday (Jan. 30) with a CUNYAC road matchup against the City College of New York Beavers (4-14, 4-4 CUNYAC) starting at 7 p.m. inside Nat Holman Gymnasium.
