@yorkcardinals’ Gomez garners CUNYAC Men’s Volleyball All-Star status; Sanchez repeats as Sportsmanship Team selection

York College’s Sebastian Gomez secured a spot as a CUNYAC Men’s Volleyball First-Team All-Star while Stanley Sanchez collects Sportsmanship Team nod

FLUSHING, NY-- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College received a pair of honors on Tuesday, as the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) announced its 2025 Men's Volleyball major awards. Freshman outside hitter/right side Sebastian Gomez earned a First-Team All-Star selection, while senior standout setter Stanley Sanchez was named to the eight-member Sportsmanship Team for the second-consecutive season.

Hailing from Flushing, Gomez appeared in 82 sets across 23 matches, contributing 345 kills on 810 attacks (.214 hitting percentage), 32 aces, 15 total blocks, and 130 digs. He led York in points (387.5), kills, total attacks, aces, and hitting percentage, while ranking second on the team in digs.  Compared to his CUNYAC competitors, Gomez led the league in points per set (4.73) and kills per set (4.21). On the national stage, he ranked ninth in kills per set, eighth in attacks per set (9.96), and 12th in points per set. Demonstrating consistent performance with 21 matches of double-digit kills, the freshman earned two CUNYAC Rookie of the Week honors, a pair of conference Player of the Week Honorable Mention distinctions, and helped lead the Cardinals to their first CUNYAC Championship appearance since 2016. Gomez is York's first CUNYAC First-Team selection since David Heyliger Jr. in 2020.

Representing York on the Sportsmanship Team for the second-consecutive season, Sanchez led the CUNYAC with 8.90 assists per set, and ranked second with 694 assists across 78 sets.

"Stanley has been a role model both on and off the court, consistently demonstrating sportsmanship no matter the team. He truly embodies what it means to be both a great teammate and a respectful opponent," - York head men's volleyball coach Anthony Reyes

As York's primary setter, Sanchez recorded 20+ assists in 19 matches, 30+ assists in 12 matches, and notched a career-best 55 assists against both Bryn Athyn College (Feb. 15) and SUNY Old Westbury (Feb. 20). Against John Jay College (Apr. 1), Sanchez became the program's first 1,000-assist member since Avinash Thomas in 2014. Sanchez concluded his 58-match career with 1,068 assists.  In the latest NCAA Division III Rankings Summary, Sanchez sat at 29th in the nation in assists per set and 41st in assists.
