FLUSHING, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) Following a season-opening win, York College earned a pair of laurels Monday when the CUNYAC announced its men's volleyball weekly awards for matches played January 27-February 2, as David Heyliger, Jr. was named Player of the Week, while Sebastian Gomez claimed Rookie of the Week.  

The big announcement marked the first time since 2016 (March 13-21 reporting period) that York swept the two weekly awards when Randy Adams (Player of the Week) and Jonathan Liao (Rookie of the Week) were cited.

Playing in his fourth season at York, Heyliger Jr. dominated for the Cardinals in a non-conference tri-match on February 1 against City College of New York and Sarah Lawrence College. In the squad's 4-set victory over CCNY, Heyliger Jr. recorded 21 total points, including a game-high 20 kills on 32 attacks (.375 hitting percentage), along with one ace and seven digs. The CUNYAC Preseason Player to watch followed up with another strong performance against the host Gryphons, contributing 11 kills and bolstering the defense with eight digs. 

Gomez was incredible in his debut against CCNY and Sarah Lawrence.  In the season-opening win against CCNY, the Flushing, New York native tallied 10 kills, served a team-high five aces, and contributed eight digs across four sets. Against Sarah Lawrence, the rookie powered home a team-leading 16 kills on a potent .464 attack percentage while adding five digs to his stat line. Gomez becomes York's first CUNYAC Rookie of the Week honoree since 2020, when Heyliger Jr. earned the distinction for matches played March 9-15.
