Sofia Soric and
Remedios Garcia were recognized Monday as the CUNYAC announced its weekly softball awards for games played Mar. 11-17. Soric was the conference's Player of the Week selection, and Garcia earned CUNYAC Rookie of the Week status. These distinctions are York's first CUNYAC Softball honors since Nicole Ovelheira claimed Rookie of the Week in April 2016.Â
Swinging the lights out of the ball last week, Soric went 9-for-17 with a .529/.600/.941 slash line. Her offensive production resulted in 10 runs, nine stolen bases, eight RBI, and four XBH. In a back-and-forth 18-15 victory at home to Yeshiva University (Mar. 14), she went 3-for-5 with an opposite-field double and triple to go along with three runs, two RBI, and two stolen bases. In game 2, the Bayside, NY native tallied two runs, two RBI, and three SB in a 20-10 walk-off victory. Facing the Maccabees again in a road twin-bill (Mar. 17), Soric went 3-for-5, scoring four runs, stealing three bases, and accumulating four RBI in a 24-8 Game 1 domination. She added to her stats in Game 2 with an RBI triple in a 17-4 triumph.
In six contests this campaign, Soric leads the team in hits (10), runs (10), RBI (9), 3B (3), OB% (.542), SLG% (.810), and OPS (1.352). Among CUNYAC competitors, she ranks highly in runs (T-1st), triples (1st), RBI (T-1st), SLG% (2nd), OB% (4th), and hits (4th).
Garcia stepped up for the Cardinals on the mound and at the plate this past week Facing Yeshiva University in a home doubleheader, Garcia allowed two hits and struck out seven batters across seven innings in an 18-15 Game 1 victory. At the plate, she went 4-for-5 (2B, 3B) and scored three runs. In a 20-10 Game 2 victory, Garcia tossed a complete game with seven punchouts. At the plate in the sixth frame with a chance to seal the game, the freshman hit a walk-off blast to cap off a 2-for-4 (3 R, 3 BRI) display. Taking the ball in a twin bill at Valley Forge (Mar. 16), Garcia again hurled two consecutive complete games. Offensively, she stole three bases and scored the team's only run in the doubleheader. Appearing in Game 1 of a road doubleheader against Yeshiva (Mar. 17), the Queens native put together a (2-for-5, 3 R, 2 RBI, 3 SB) display in a dominating 24-8 victory.Â
Across the season, Garcia is batting .409 (9-of-22) with 10 runs, five RBI, 3 XBH, and a successful 100 % stolen base rate (7-for-7). On the mound, she has tossed six complete games, striking out 25 batters in 31 innings. Offensively, she places in the top five on the CUNYAC leaderboard in runs (T-1st), SLG% (5th), and stolen bases (5th). Pitching-wise, the strikeout and innings totals are good for first and third respectively. Â
