@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball increases output against John Jay

York College travels Thursday (Mar. 14) to face CCNY in a CUNYAC matchup

BOX SCORE JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball returned to home court Tuesday evening, battling the John Jay College Bloodhounds (11-5, 5-2 CUNYAC) in a CUNYAC showdown.  A competitive first two stanzas, the Bloodhounds emerged victorious in straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-12) from York College Gymnasium.

First Set Breakdown
  • A kill by Heyliger, Jr. gave York an early 2-0 edge.
  • John Jay responded with six consecutive points.
  • An extended 6-3 burst from York narrowed the deficit to one (9-8).
  • After the Bloodhounds extended their lead to five (14-9), York pulled within two on three separate occasions, with a kill from Alexis Ramirez being the latest point (16-14).
  • The Cardinals could not inch closer, as a 4-1 spurt by John Jay made it a five-point scoreline again (20-15).
  • A pair of Heyliger, Jr. smackdowns cut it to four (23-19) before kills by Jeferson Avila and Steven Ajazi won the set for John Jay.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Behind 6-3, Heyliger, Jr.'s two kills helped tie the score at 8.
  • Settling down, the Bloodhounds took control of the match with a 10-2 blitz, taking an 18-10 lead.
  • Attempting a comeback, a kill and an ace from Ramirez brought the Cardinals back within five (21-16).
  • York never got closer, as a kill by Ajazi closed out a 25-18 stanza victory.
Third Set Breakdown
  • A back-and-forth beginning, Heyliger, Jr.'s two kills assisted a 5-4 advantage for York.
  • Logan Ramos' ace to make it 6-5 gave John Jay a permanent lead in the period.
  • A kill by Ramos made it 13-9 for the Bloodhounds.
  • Following a smack down by Ramirez to make it 16-12, John Jay claimed the final nine points of the match.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Heyliger, Jr. totaled a match-high 13 kills on 37 swings for a .108 attack percentage.
  • Ramirez added eight kills and a team-leading 43 attempts.
  • Vincent Agokei jumped high for a career-best 2 blocks.
  • Ahmed Algendy scooped up a career-high 14 digs from the libero position.
  • Stanley Sanchez set up the attack with 20 assists.
For John Jay
  • Ramos turned in a complete performance with team-highs in kills (10), total attacks (25), and aces (3) to go along with 13 digs.
  • Avila produced nine kills on a stout .273 swing percentage.
  • Micah Rossman battled defensively with 19 digs.
  • Christian Perea orchestrated the offense with a match-high 27 assists.
Inside the Box Score
York hit .021 on 97 attacks, while John Jay attacked at a .157 rate on 89 swings. Additionally, the Bloodhounds outpaced the Cardinals in points (40-28), kills (28-22), assists (28-21), and digs (49-45).
