Aidony Nivar was recognized Monday with the Rookie of the Week award as the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) released its weekly awards for games played February 5-11. With this honor, Nivar eclipsed Omari Phipps' record of five CUNYAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week selections achieved in the 2007-08 campaign.
Nivar bounced back with two 20+ point outbursts for the Cardinals, averaging 22.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, on 60 percent (15-of-25) field goal shooting and 50 percent (5-of-10) from downtown. Playing 37 battling minutes in a road battle to Brooklyn College (Feb. 7), Nivar led the team with 21 points (6-of-9 FG, 4-of-6 3FG, 5-of-5 FT), grabbed six rebounds, and dished out four dimes in a back-and-forth 69-67 defeat. Playing a stout Baruch defense (Feb. 9), Nivar netted a game-best 23 points (9-of-16 FG, 4-of-6 FT).
In 23 contests, the 6x CUNYAC Rookie of the Week is averaging 13.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 41.6 percent (109-of-262) from the floor and a scorching 37.1 percent (59-of-159) from 3-point distance on over 6.9 attempts per game.
Among York players, Nivar leads the team in steals, and places second in scoring and 3-point shooting, fourth in assists, and fourth in rebounding. In the CUNYAC hierarchy, the Dominican Republic native is fourth in steals, ninth in points, and 23rd in assists per game. Additionally, the sharpshooter ranks third in the conference in 3-point shooting and 57th among all Division III players.
