www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball will compete for the 2022 CUNYAC Championship as the No. 4 seed starting Sunday (Feb. 20) with a first-round home matchup against No. 5 Hunter College Hawks at 12:30 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium. The Cardinals split the season series with Hunter, taking a 66-61 road win on January 19 before falling 57-48 on February 11 at home.
York has won five of its last nine contests, putting together a pair of two-game winning streaks to that stretch. The Cardinals advance to CUNYAC Championship play for the second-consecutive season after concluding the 2019-20 in the semifinal round. York leads the CUNYAC with 4.6 blocks per game and 33.1 defensive rebounds per game. The Cardinals also rank top-3 in the CUNYAC in field-goal percentage (2nd, 39.6), assists per game (3rd, 13.7), 3-point field goal percentage (3rd, 26.4), rebounding margin (2nd, +6.9), rebounds per game (2nd, 47.0), opponents rebounds per game (2nd, 40.1), scoring defense (3rd, 62.2), field-goal percentage defense (2nd, 34.1), 3-point field-goal percentage defense (2nd, 24.0) and opponent free-throw percentage (3rd, 63.8). York's defensive front ranks among the NCAA Division III leaders in blocked shots per game (35th), rebounds per game (21st), defensive rebounds per game (6th) and 3-point field goal defense (39th).
The Cardinals are led by center
Mac-Dege Dessources, who leads the CUNYAC in with 20.3 points, 14.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. Dessources also ranks among the NCAA Division III leaders in points per game (16th), rebounds per game (2nd), offensive rebounds per game (2nd, 6.3), defensive rebounds per game (21st, 8.1), blocked shots per game (34th), double-doubles (34th, 11) and field-goal percentage (57th).
Ellma Hodzic contributes career-highs of 14.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.9 blocks in 38.3 minutes per game.
Kristina Sierra shoots a team-leading 34 percent from 3-point territory and averages 9.7 points.
Alicia Gumbs adds 9.6 points, 3.4 assists and 1.7 steals to the lineup while
Aminata Sagna's 9.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals bolster the defensive attack.
The winner of Sunday's first-round bout will play again Tuesday (Feb. 22) in the CUNYAC semifinals at the top-seeded Brooklyn College Bulldogs. From there, the championship game will be hosted by CCNY next Friday (Feb. 25) at 5:30 p.m. inside Nat Holman Gymnasium.
