BOX SCORE The 2016 York College softball season came to a close on Friday with an 11-3 loss to the College of New Rochelle. The Cardinals finish the season with a record of 3-24 overall and 1-11 in CUNYAC.
 
New Rochelle jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, and the score remained the same until the top of the fourth. Chyla Guevara was able to get the rally started with a walk before Nicole Ovelheira tripled her in to tie the game with her team-leading 22nd RBI of the season.
 
The Blue Angels took the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run home run by Victoria Rivera. They added to their lead in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take an 8-1 lead.
 
Down by seven, York needed to get something going on offense in the sixth. Guevara led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on two wild pitches before Shauneille Sinanan drove her in with a sacrifice fly. Kimberly Barnes reached on an error which brought home Ovelheira, who had walked earlier in the inning. That was all the Cardinals could get as a couple of pop ups ended the inning.
 
York needed to hold New Rochelle to less than three runs in the bottom of the sixth in order to send it to the seventh inning for one last chance. They were unable to do that however, as New Rochelle scored three in the sixth to take the victory.
 
There was supposed to be a second game played on the day, but it was called in the second inning due to rain with York leading.
 
It was a rough season for the softball team, but the future is looking up. They will bring back many key players next season, including Ovelheira, who was a two-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, and led the team in hitting, RBIs, doubles, and home runs. She also established a new school record for batting average with a .408 mark.
