John Jay Rallies to Top York Softball, 11-9

BOX SCORE
BELLEROSE, N.Y.- The York College softball team jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the top of the second, but a six-run fourth inning by John Jay College propelled the Bloodhounds to a come-from-behind, 11-9, victory over the Cardinals.

York looked like they had this game in hand early on.  In the top of the first, Chyla Guevara and Priscilla Lallave each had run-scoring singles to give the Cardinals an early, 2-0 lead.  After John Jay brought home a run in the bottom half of the first, York put up four more runs in the top of the second.  A Michelle Deleon triple brought home the first run of the inning and then a John Jay error gave York another run.   Later in the inning, Geneva Faulk blasted a two-run triple to cap off the four-run inning.

But John Jay chipped into York's lead over the next two innings, scoring two runs in both the second and third frames to cut the Cardinal advantage to 6-5.

The fourth inning was where the game turned.  Three York errors helped set up a big inning for the Bloodhounds.  With a run in already and runners on second and third, Sara McKenna singled home two runs to give John Jay an 8-6 lead.  After a wild pitch moved McKenna to second, Jennifer Pace singled her home to make it 9-6.  After the third York error of the frame extended the inning, John Jay's Kalyssa Daley brought home two more runs with a single to round out the scoring.

The Cardinals plated three runs in the top of the sixth to get back in the game.  Faulk brought home another run with her second triple of the game and she later scored on a wild pitch.  Danielle Dunn would also score on a wild pitch later in the inning.  York put a runner on in the top of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but McKenna, who was on the mound, forced a double play to end the game.

Faulk's big day went to waste, as she finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs.  Chyla Guevara also had a nice afternoon, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Eliana Moronta and Deleon each added two hits apiece.

John Jay had five players with two hits apiece.  McKenna earned the win, despite allowing eight earned runs.

The Cardinals were supposed to play a doubleheader.  However, field conditions delayed the game one hour.  With no lights on the field, York could only get one game in.  The other game will now be played on Monday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. at Randall's Island.  York will return to action on Thursday with a single game at home against the College of New Rochelle at 5 p.m.
