NEW YORK N.Y. – The York College men's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to rival Hunter College in the final two matches of the regular season on Tuesday night.  York fell in the first match, 3-1 (27-25, 20-25, 25-21, 26-24) and then lost 3-0, (28-26, 25-19, 25-21) in the second match.

The two teams came into the night with identical 10-2 CUNY Athletic Conference records.  With the two losses, York will now be the #3 seed in next week's CUNYAC playoffs, while Hunter earns the #2 seed.

Hunter (14-10) earned a bit of revenge against the Cardinals, who upset the Hawks in last year's CUNYAC semifinals.  The two could end up meeting in the semifinals once again this year.  They would be slated to face each other should they win their respective quarterfinal matches.

The first match was decided by the final moments of set one and set four—both were two-point victories for the Hawks.  After Hunter built an early 9-4 advantage in the opening set, York slowly chipped away to tie the match at 20-20. With the score still tied at 24-24, York miscues gave the Hawks the opening set—a service error and then an attack error by York was the difference.

The two teams split the next two sets and the fourth set came down to the wire. With the two teams still tied at 25-25, a Ben Crusinberry kill gave the Hawks match point and then a block by Crusinberry and Alexandru Barbulescu clinched the victory.

Edner Geffrard led York with 12 kills, while Leszek Stankiewicz and Bryan Williams each had ten kills.  Williams also added 11 digs.  Avinash Thomas finished with 38 assists and 11 digs.  Randy Adams notched eight kills, with an efficient hitting percentage of .500, to go along with eight digs and four block assists.  Matthew Ng had a match-high 18 kills, while Barbulescu and Crusinberry each had ten for Hunter.

In the second match, it was the Hawks who pulled out another close victory in the opening set.  With the score tied at 26-26, Barbulescu had two straight kills to give Hunter the 1-0 lead. With the momentum of another close victory, Hunter was able to take the next two sets by a more comfortable margin.

Adams had another big night in the second match, finishing with 12 kills and five digs. Thomas added 27 assists and ten digs. Stankiewicz and Williams had six kills apiece.

York (18-17) will now take on Lehman College in the quarterfinals on April 8 at 7:30 at home.
