BRONX, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team opened up CUNY Athletic Conference play in impressive fashion, as they swept both Brooklyn College and Lehman College on Saturday morning. York started the day with a 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-19) victory over the Bulldogs, before defeating the host Lightning, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-13). With the two victories, York (5-2, 2-0 CUNYAC) has now won five straight matches.
Against the Bulldogs (5-4, 1-1 CUNYAC), York needed a balanced attack to pull off the victory. Senior
Bryan Williams led the way with nine kills, while junior
Edner Geffrard finished with eight kills and three blocks. Senior
Leszek Stankiewicz added six kills and finished with six total blocks. Sophomore setter
Avinash Thomas totaled 29 assists to go along with three kills.
York had an easier go of things against Lehman (4-1, 1-1 CUNYAC), as they won all three sets convincingly. Geffrard had another big effort with 12 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, five digs and four blocks. Freshman
Randy Adams finished with 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .667, while Williams had another strong outing, recording eight kills and hitting .700. Stankiewicz chipped in seven kills and seven digs and Thomas finished with a season-high 32 assists.
York will return to action on Wednesday, February 12 when they host Baruch College in a rematch of last year's CUNYAC Championship match at 5:30 p.m. Following the match, York will also host Fontbonne University (Missouri) at 7:30 p.m.
