JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College women's basketball team fell to Hunter College, 83-59, in the final regular season event of the year--senior night. The three seniors on the York women's basketball team were each honored with plaques prior to tip-off.
York had a rough start to the game, shooting poorly, and committing 10 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of action, which contributed to an early 14-point lead for Hunter.
York would battle back and cut Hunter's lead down to just eight after a three-point play from
Shauncia McClendon, followed by a huge three-point basket from
Nia Rene to cut Hunter's lead to just eight points. However, Hunter would build their lead again, and go into the half up 43-29, and would extend their lead to as large as 28 points in the second half.
York shot poorly on the night and went 20-for-63 from the field, however they were a little better from long range, making seven three's on the night, three of which came from
Nia Rene, and two coming from senior
Analia Moore.
Fellow seniors
Danielle Dunn and
Aimee Aikens also had strong performances. Dunn scored a team-high 12 points, to go along with her eight rebounds, while Aikens led the team in steals, with three, and also contributed seven of the team's 18 assists.
Other key performers for York included McClendon, who scored 11 points, and
Angelika Ruggiano who had 11 points to go along with seven assists.
Hunter was led by Kristen Markoe, who had game-highs in both points (18) and rebounds (13), and Nicole Lenard, who had a game-high eight assists to go with 15 points.
With this win, Hunter finishes the regular season 13-12 (10-6 CUNYAC), while York closes the regular season with an overall record of 3-22 (2-14 CUNYAC). York's next game will be a playoff matchup at the College of Staten Island, on Sunday February 23rd at 1 p.m.
