Men’s Volleyball Comes Up Short Against Ramapo in ECAC Semifinals

BOX SCORE
OWINGS MILLS, M.D. – The York College men's volleyball team was defeated by Ramapo College in four sets by a score of 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 25-18) in the semifinals of the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Division Championships.  With the loss, the Cardinals 2013 season comes to a close.

Ramapo came out strong, taking the first set convincingly thanks to strong defensive play.  The Roadrunners jumped out to a 15-9 lead and were never threatened.

But the Cardinals picked up their play in the second.  York took an early 6-2 advantage following a kill from Edner Geffrard.  But Ramapo eventually evened the score at 13 apiece after a Chris Sodnam kill.  From there, the two teams went back and forth until the final points of the set. With the score tied at 21-21, the Cardinals rolled off four straight points to take the set and even up the match.

In the third and fourth sets, Ramapo was able to pull away midway.  York kept it close early but could not hold off the Roadrunners towards the end of each set.

York was paced by Geffrard who slammed 12 kills, hit .281 and added eight digs.  Avinash Thomas nearly had a triple-double, recording seven kills, 15 assists and 12 digs.  Leszek Stankiewicz finished with seven kills and Sebastien Francois added seven. Libero Terrence Sutton had 10 digs.

Ramapo got strong efforts from Peter Desvouges (14 kills) and Brian Colabella (12 kills).  But libero Aaron Kerschner may have been the difference as he recorded a match-high 18 digs, helping to hold the Cardinals to just a .047 hitting percentage.

Ramapo (20-11) advances to the finals of the ECAC Championship where they will take on Stevenson later today.  York finishes the 2013 season with a record of 24-16.  Their 24 wins is a school record.
