BELLEROSE, N.Y— The Lehman College Lightning, paced by five hits and four RBI from catcher Janet Ortiz, totaled 26 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the York College softball team, defeating the Cardinals 15-2 in game one and 8-5 in the nightcap.
It appeared it would be a pitchers duel for most of the afternoon, as both teams were held scoreless in the first three frames of game one. But in the top of the fourth, Lehman loaded the bases without hitting the ball out of the infield, after two infield hits and a fielder's choice. Ashley Falcon then cleared the bases with a triple to put the Lightning up 3-0. Lehman would tack on four more runs that inning, which included another bases-clearing hit that was aided by an error in the outfield.
After pushing across a run in the fifth, Lehman duplicated its seven-run outburst in the sixth inning. A two-RBI base hit by Ernestine Grant and a RBI double by Ortiz were the big knocks in the inning.
York's only offense in game one came in the fifth, when a two-out error allowed
Geneva Faulk and
Karen Werner to score. The Cardinals were shut down by Lehman's Sheila San Andres, who allowed just three hits over six innings of work. She also earned the win game two.
In game two, there was little offense in the early going once again, until the top of the third. Ortiz doubled home another run to put the Lightning on the board and Yatnery Almonte followed with a run-scoring single.
The Cardinals responded with two in the bottom of the inning to even the score at 2-2.
Danielle Dunn singled home Werner for the first run of the game and another run came around after
Shanelle Baldwin reached on an error.
But the Lehman bats stayed hot as they added a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to put the game out of reach. York battled back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a home run by
Joviette Frederick and a two-run single by
Kimberly Barnes. However, Lehman added one more in the sixth to make the score 8-5 and then the game was called after six due to darkness.
With the loss, York drops to 3-14, 0-6 in the CUNYAC. Lehman improves to 4-15, 2-6 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will host Baruch College on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
