Men’s Volleyball Gives #10 Baruch a Scare but Falls in Four Sets
BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College men's volleyball team gave #10 Baruch College everything they had, but the Bearcats were able to pull out a hard-fought win in four sets by a score of 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 28-26, 25-13) in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night.
The key moment of the contest came in third set. York had picked up a win in the second set to even the match at 1-1 and played inspired volleyball in third. Led by junior
Leszek Stankiewicz, the Cardinals blocked five shots in the third set and also benefitted from four Baruch service errors to earn two set points. York led 24-23 and again at 26-25, but both times Baruch's Steven Coniglio came up with a kill to even the score. York followed with consecutive hitting errors to give Baruch the win in the pivotal third set.
The Cardinals had a letdown in the fourth set as it seemed they exhausted themselves trying to take the third. Coupled with the momentum Baruch got from coming from behind to win the third, the Bearcats easily won the final set, 25-13, to take the match.
The Bearcats got contributions from many players in the win, led by Nick Smith, who had a match-high 14 kills. Jack McKee added 13 kills and three blocks and Coniglio had 11 kills and hit .409. Setter Scott Standring led all players with 47 assists.
York was led by sophomore
Sebastien Francois, who had ten kills and hit .533, while also recording eight digs and blocking three shots. Stankiewicz finished with six kills and six blocks and
Edner Geffrard registered seven kills and four blocks. Libero
Terrence Sutton led all players with 11 digs.
Baruch improves to 12-4, 4-0 in the CUNYAC and York drops to 14-6, 5-2 in the CUNYAC. The Cardinals will return to action on Friday when they host the Ninth Annual York College Men's Volleyball Classic. York will take on Lancaster Bible at 4:30 p.m. and Wells College at 8:30 p.m.
