Softball Drops Doubleheader vs. St. Joseph’s

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2
BELLEROSE, N.Y.— The York College softball team dropped a pair of games to St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on Thursday afternoon.  York dropped a 4-0 contest in game one before the Bears exploded for a 14-5 victory in the nightcap.

Game one didn't feature much offense with the exception of the bottom of the third.  After getting the leadoff batter on, St. Joseph's Maria Randazzo brought home the game's first run with an RBI double.  Later in the inning, with two outs and two runners on, Cassandra Molinari brought home both runs with another double before getting thrown out a third trying to stretch it into a triple.  St. Joe's would later add another run in the sixth.

Meanwhile, York was held to just two hits on the afternoon thanks to the strong pitching of Mabel Vargas.  The right-hander went the distance, while striking out four to earn the shutout.  The Cardinals only hits came on a single by Shanelle Baldwin in the second and another single by Danielle Dunn in the fourth.

In game two, it was all Bears thanks to a huge first inning in which St. Joseph's put up six runs.  They had eight hits in the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple by Danielle Marino and a two-run single by Christina Quintana.  St. Joseph's would continue to pour it on, scoring another three in the second and five in the third.

The York bats did come alive late as they scored one in the fourth and four in the fifth.  An RBI double by Baldiwin in the fourth put York on the board and a three-run double by Dunn highlighted the four-run fifth for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals drop to 3-8 on the season while St. Joseph's improves to 3-7.  The Cardinals will return to action next Wednesday, April 3 when they host Hunter College at 3:30 p.m.
