Softball Falls to Bethany and Old Westbury in Season-Opener

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA— The York College softball team opened the 2013 softball season on Friday, falling to Bethany College, 7-2, in the opening game before dropping a 9-0 game to SUNY Old Westbury in the nightcap at the Beach Blast tournament in Virginia Beach.

York was done in by a four-run frame in the bottom of the second. A two-out, two-run single off the bat of Bethany's Maria Vallone capped off the scoring for the Bisons in the inning.
The Cardinals picked up a run in the third after an RBI single by junior
Geneva Faulk and another run in the fifth after an infield single by senior
Joviette Frederick plated
Evelyn Florentino. But Bethany tacked on two more runs in the third and another in the fifth to help secure the win.
Bethany's Emily Jump tossed four innings and struck out nine batters to earn the win. Kelsey Bish closed out the final three innings, striking out seven batters. York's
Priscilla Lallave took the loss after allowing four earned runs over six innings. Frederick led the Cardinal bats, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Old Westbury Recap
Against Old Westbury, York was held to just one hit on the evening, which was a
Priscilla Lallave single that broke up a no-hit bid by Panthers pitcher Alyssa Clancy. She struck out 14 batters and did not allow a walk to earn the victory.
The big inning for Old Westbury, was the top of the fourth, where the Panthers pushed five runs across. A two-run triple by Jennifer Jean highlighted the big inning. She would finish 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead Old Westbury (2-0).
