Women’s Basketball Plays Hunter Tough but Falls to Hawks 55-49

BOX SCORE
NEW YORK, NY— The York College women's basketball team played a tough defensive game against a strong Hunter College team, but the Hawks were able to hold off the Cardinals late, winning by a score of 55-49 in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night.

York held the Hawks to 30 percent shooting on the night and forced 23 turnovers, which is normally a recipe for success.  But the Hawks defense was just as tough, as they kept the York offense at bay as well.  The Cardinals shot 32 percent and were shutout from beyond the arc, while also committing too many turnovers—a total of 24 on the night.

The Hawks never trailed in the contest, leading by as many as 12 points in the second half, following a Nicole Lenard three-pointer with 16:47 to play that made it 39-27.  But York fought its way back into the game.  The Hawks were up by seven points (44-37), when the Cardinals went on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 45-45 with 7:41 left.  The run could be attributed to good defense, as they held the Hawks without a field goal and just one free throw during a five-minute span.

The Hawks would regroup, though, and scored on their next two possessions to go up by four.  They still held a four-point lead in the final minute.  York tried to make one last run but could not convert a bucket on their final two possessions.

The Cardinals were led by Danielle Dunn, who matched a career-high 14 points, while grabbing eight boards.  Angelika Ruggiano added 13 points and Ishonda McFarland finished with eight points and 10 boards.  Stayce Kay Muirhead pulled down 11 rebounds.

Lenard, who burned the Cardinals in their first match-up was dominant once again, netting 20 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Kristen Sellis had 12 points and 12 boards.  Hunter improves to 11-12, 9-5 in the CUNYAC.

York (2-21) will host Medgar Evers College on Friday night in its final home game of the season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.  It is also the 3rd Annual Spirit Day at York.  Jet Blue tickets and Applebee's gift cards will be raffled off and t-shirts will be given away.  In addition, York seniors Alicia Lee and McFarland will be honored prior to tip-off.  Admission to York games are always free!
