New Rochelle Uses Strong First Half to Top York Women’s Basketball

BOX SCORE
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.— The College of New Rochelle closed the first half on an 11-0 run and never looked back, en route to defeating the York College women's basketball team by a score of 74-57 on Tuesday evening.

The game was competitive throughout with the exception of that three-minute stretch at the end of the half, where 11 unanswered points increased New Rochelle's lead from five points to 16 points.  New Rochelle led wire-to-wire but did not lead by more than seven points prior to that run.  The two teams played close in the second half as well, with the Blue Angels holding a 34-33 advantage.

The biggest difference in the game was execution.  New Rochelle converted 45 percent of their shots from the field, while York shot 32 percent on the day.  The Cardinals also struggled from the charity stripe, shooting just 47 percent.

Despite the loss, York got a nice effort from freshman Kiera Burns, who scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots.  Sophomore Angelika Ruggiano added 12 points.

New Rochelle was led by Jah-Leah Ellis who recorded a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds.  Alyssa Pechin added 20 points and six assists.  The Blue Angels improve to 3-0 with the victory, while York drops to 0-3.

The Cardinals will be idle until next Tuesday, November 26 when they take on Staten Island in their home opener at 6 p.m.
