Late Run Propels John Jay Over York in Women's Basketball
BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, NY-- In a tight game throughout, John Jay College used a late run to pull away and defeat the York College women's basketball team, 59-53, on Friday evening at the York College Gymnasium.
The Cardinals were led by
Ishonda McFarland, who finished with 14 points, nine boards and four assists.
Danielle Dunn finished with 13 points and seven boards and
Angelika Ruggiano registered nine assists.
Nia Rene and
Aimee Aikens each added nine points.
York had little answer for John Jay's Jamecia Forsythe, who finished with a game-high 19 points and 17 rebounds. Victoria Story also had a nice game, scoring 16 points and pulling down nine boards.
The Cardinals (0-11, 0-4 CUNYAC) looked like they might get that elusive first win of the year. After trailing for most of the first half, York closed the half strong and went into the locker room with a one-point advantage (24-23).
The two teams went back and forth in second half and the score was tied at 42-42 with 7:53 to play. But the Bloodhounds went on a 9-0 run from that point to take a 51-42 advantage. John Jay's Danielle Eagan was the catalyst during the run, scoring four of those points.
York tried to close the gap and got within four points (55-51) after an
Aimee Aikens three-pointer with 1:58 to play. But that would be as close as York could get the rest of the way. John Jay improved to 5-6, 3-1 in CUNYAC play with the victory.
The Cardinals will return to action next Tuesday when they visit the City College of New York at 5:00 p.m.
