McFarland’s 28 Points Not Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls to Hunter

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, NY—York College senior Ishonda McFarland recorded a double-double, scoring a career-high 28 points, while grabbing 13 boards but her effort would not be enough, as the Cardinals women's basketball team fell to Hunter College, 75-65.

McFarland's effort was overshadowed by the play of Hunter's Nicole Lenard, who also scored 28 points and recorded six assists and four steals.  The Cardinals had no answer for her throughout the night.

York held the lead in the early-going, leading by as many as five, following a three-pointer by Angelika Ruggiano that made the score 14-9.  The lead could have been much greater, as the Hawks continually turned the ball over in the early going, but York could not convert enough of those turnovers into points.

The Hawks would regroup late in the first half and went on a 12-0 run that put them up 28-18 with 4:19 to play in the half.  They would go into the locker room with the same ten-point cushion.

York made an early run in the second half to cut the deficit down to one point (37-36) after a Stayce Kay Muirhead lay-up.  The game would stay close for most of the first half but the Hawks would never relinquish the lead and gradually pulled away.

Also contributing for York in the loss was Muirhead, who finished with a double-double, netting 10 points and grabbing 17 rebounds---one shy of her career-high.  Ruggiano scored ten points and had five assists.

York falls to 0-13, 0-6 in the CUNYAC, while Hunter improves to 4-9, 4-2 in CUNYAC play.  The Cardinals will return to action on Monday when they travel to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
