Cardinals Pick up Tenth Conference Win; Top John Jay In Straight Sets

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team showed no rust in a conference contest with John Jay College, despite not having played in nearly two weeks, easily defeating the Bloodhounds 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-10) on Monday evening. With the win, York now stands at 18-11 overall and 10-2 in CUNY Athletic Conference play.
The Cardinals are now 8-2 in their last ten games, with their only two losses coming against #12 Hunter College and Division II, Mount Olive College in that span. After a sluggish 5-8 start to the season, York has gone 13-3 the rest of the way.
York quickly jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the first set but allowed John Jay to claw back into the set, as the Bloodhounds got back to within three points at 19-16. The Cardinals did not allow the Bloodhounds to get any closer and they finished off the set with a kill by
Maximo Bonilla.
From there, it was all York, as the Cardinals dominated the second and third sets. The Cardinals jumped out to a commanding 14-2 cushion in the second set and an 11-2 lead in the third set.
York was led by
Tobi Awopetu, who finished with seven kills and six blocks—five of the solo variety.
Edner Geffrard had a match-high eight kills (.385) and
Francis Jimenez chipped in five kills.
Kevin Mora and Bonilla each had a match-high four digs. John Jay struggled mightily, recording just 14 kills and hitting -.214. York hit .226 on the evening and registered 28 kills.
York will close out the regular season with a pair of important conference games against #14 Baruch College. The doubleheader begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at York College.
