Mount Saint Vincent Slugs Way to Doubleheader Sweep of Softball Team

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2
BRONX, N.Y.— The College of Mount Saint Vincent blasted five home runs in a doubleheader sweep of the York College softball team, defeating the Cardinals by scores of 9-0 and 10-2.

The Dolphins wasted little time putting runs on the board, opening the first inning of game one with a run, following a bases loaded walk.  In the second frame, MSV put up three more runs, which was highlighted by a two-run single by Kathleen Davis.  In the bottom of the third, a two-run homer by Marni O'Shea gave the Dolphins a 5-0 cushion.  In the fifth, Davis added a three-run blast to round out the scoring for the Dolphins. Davis would finish the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and five RBIs.

On offense, York was held to just four hits on the day.  MSV pitcher Courtney Keane tossed five innings and struck out five batters en route to earning the shutout.

In game two, the Dolphins plated ten runs and pounded out 14 hits.  The game was scoreless, though, until the top of the third when the Cardinals struck first.  Junior Joviette Frederick smacked a two-out triple and then came around to score when the relay throw by the shortstop was wild.

The lead would be short-lived though, as MSV put up two runs in the bottom half of the inning.  O'Shea hit her second home run of the day—another two-run blast, to put the Dolphins up 2-1.  MSV added two more runs in the fourth to go up 4-1 after a leadoff home run by Ashley Winn and a bases loaded walk later in the inning.  The Cardinals stayed in striking distance though and cut the lead to 4-2 after the top of the fifth when Michelle DeLeon smacked an RBI double, which brought home Evelyn Florentino.

But the game got away form York in the bottom of the fifth when the Dolphins put a five-spot up on the board.  MSV had four hits and a walk in the inning and all those base runners would eventually come around to score.  The inning was capped off by yet another O'Shea home run—her third of the day and second of the game.

O'Shea finished the day, going 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs.  York was led by Frederick, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

York falls to 5-13 on the season and Mount Saint Vincent improves to 8-20.  The Cardinals will visit John Jay College on Thursday at 12:00 p.m.
