Hunter Hands York its First Conference Loss of the Season

BOX SCORE

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped and were handed its first CUNY Athletic Conference loss of the season, falling to Hunter College 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-16) on Tuesday evening.

York (11-9, 6-1 CUNYAC) and Hunter (10-7, 7-0 CUNYAC) each came into tonight's contest with perfect conference records.  With the win, the Hawks now have sole possession of first place.

In the opening set, the Hawks seemed to be in control as they jumped out to a 20-12 cushion.  They continued to cruise in the set and held set point at 24-15.  But York rolled off eight straight points to make the score 24-23.  Sloppy play by Hunter allowed York to get back into the set, as the Hawks made five consecutive errors.  After a kill by Edner Geffrard, Hunter made two more hitting errors to make it 24-23. The Cardinals fought off eight straight set points but could not get the last one they needed.  A kill by Hunter's Chris Newcomb finished off the set.

From there, it was all Hawks in the second and third sets.  Hunter jumped out to early leads in the remaining two sets and, unlike the first set, did not allow York to get back in it.

York was led by Bryan Williams, who had nine kills and by Geffrard, who recorded eight kills, four digs and four blocks.
Glenn Vargas had 23 assists at the setter position.

Hunter was led by Newcomb who registered 12 kills and two blocks.  Eric Barty added six kills and three digs.

York will return to action on Friday when they host the eighth annual York Men's Volleyball Classic. The Cardinals will take on Gallaudet University at 4:30 p.m. and the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 8:30 p.m.
