Men’s Volleyball Improves to 6-0 in Conference Play with Pair of Victories

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team improved to 11-8 and 6-0 in CUNY Athletic Conference play with a pair of victories at the CUNYAC multi-match held at City College Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals came from behind in their opening match to defeat host CCNY 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 15-11) and then took care of Brooklyn College in four sets by a score of 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 25-22).
Bryan Williams set a new career-high in kills twice on Saturday, slamming 22 kills in the five-setter against CCNY and then topping that with 23 kills in just four sets against Brooklyn.
York trailed 2-1 against CCNY but rallied back to win in five sets and keep their conference record unblemished.
Terrence Sutton added ten digs and ten kills and four-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Edner Geffard added nine kills and nine digs. Setter
Glenn Vargas had 30 assists.
Against Brooklyn, York cruised in the first two sets and looked to be on its way to an easy three-set win. But the Bulldogs fought back and made things very interesting. Brooklyn won a nail-biter in the third set by a score of 26-24 and then pushed York hard in the fourth set before the Cardinals came out on top, 25-22.
Williams hit an incredible .759 in that match, committing just one error in 29 attempts, while recording 23 kills. At one point, he recorded 15 kills in a row. He was perfect in the second and third sets, registering eight kills in eight attempts in the second set ,and five in five attempts in the third. Geffrard had another nice game, adding 15 kills (.550) to go along with four aces.
Glenn Vargas picked up 28 assists and six digs and Sutton added seven kills and eight digs.
York will face off with Hunter College, who is also 6-0 in conference, on Tuesday at Hunter College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
