BRONX, NY— In what has become somewhat of an annual spring tradition, the York College and Lehman College softball teams played a pair of wild games on Monday evening. The Cardinals benefitted from an 11-error performance by the Lightning in game one of the doubleheader and defeated their conference foe 14-8. But in the nightcap, the Lighting pounded out 19 hits and crushed York by a score of 21-1.
The wildness started in the top of the second of game one, when the Cardinals strung four hits together and benefitted from an unbelievable eight errors by Lehman.
Danielle Dunn singled and scored twice in the inning, while earning one of the two RBIs that inning. Dunn would have a big game one, going 5-for-5 with a pair of runs and three RBIs.
The Lightning would gradually make things interesting though, plating three runs in the third and two in the fifth, while holding York scoreless to make it an 8-5 game going into the sixth inning. But the Cardinals scored three more runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to put the game away.
York pitcher
Kimberly Barnes went the distance for York, scattering nine hits and allowing three earned runs, while striking out five to earn her second victory of the season. Michelle DeLeon went 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI and
Evelyn Florentino was 2-for-5 with two runs and a RBI.
Game two was a completely different affair, as Lehman fixed the fielding woes that plagued them in game one, while exploding offensively, putting up crooked numbers in every inning. Every starter had at least one hit for the Lightning, and six of them had multiple hits. Leading the way for Lehman, was Natalie Martinez, who was 4-for-4 with four runs and RBI, and Ashley Williams, who went 3-for-5 with five runs batted in and one run scored.
Lehman pitcher Shiela San Andres kept the York bats in check, allowing just three hits and an unearned run over five innings.
The two teams are no strangers to playing crazy games against each other. Last year Lehman topped York 21-5 and 23-9. The year before that, York won the doubleheader by scores of 14-8 and 18-16.
York's record now stands at 3-7, 1-5 in the CUNY Athletic Conference, while Lehman is 5-9, 1-3 in CUNYAC play. The Cardinals will St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on Saturday at Cunningham Park, Field #9. First pitch is set for noon.
