Softball Drops Conference Doubleheader to Hunter

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The York College softball team opened up the conference portion of its schedule with a pair of losses to Hunter College on Friday afternoon. York lost by scores of 12-4 and 14-4.
Game One Recap
A sloppy second inning proved to be the undoing for the Cardinals. Three errors in the innings resulted in five runs being scored, turning a manageable 2-0 deficit into a 7-0 hole. The Hawks added another run in the third and four more in the fifth, which was capped off by a three-run home run by Hunter's Sophia Ponce.
Offensively, the Cardinals pushed across two runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Krystina Rivera and
Evelyn Florentino chipped in an RBI each in the top of the fourth. A two-run single by
Danielle Dunn in the top of the fifth rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals.
Game Two Recap
The second inning once was again was the turning point, as Hunter plated nine runs in the second frame in game two. The Hawks pounded out five hits, while also benefitting from three walks and an error in the inning. After just two innings, Hunter had a 12-3 cushion.
York was able to get off to a fast start, jumping out a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Michelle DeLeon got things started with a one-out double and later came around to score on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Florentino singled home a run to make it 2-0, and the third run came home thanks to a Hunter error.
However, the lead would be short-lived, as the Hawks put up a three-spot of their own in the first before exploding for nine runs in the second.
With the losses, York drops to 2-4, 0-2 in the CUNYAC. Hunter improves to 5-7, 2-0 in CUNYAC play. The Cardinals will visit Baruch at Randall's Island beginning at 12:00 p.m.
