JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team had a busy day Saturday as they hosted three conference matches at the York College Gymnasium. The Cardinals defeated Medgar Evers College in the opening and final match by scores of 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-17) and 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-20) respectively. In between, they dropped a match to Hunter College in straight sets by a score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-19).
York (16-11, 8-2 CUNYAC) had little trouble disposing of Medgar Evers (0-21, 0-11 CUNYAC) in both contests. The Cardinals were led by six-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week selection
Edner Geffrard, who picked up ten kills (.471) in the first match and 16 kills (.379) in the final match.
Bryan Williams added 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks in the first match.
Terrence Sutton chipped in nine kills (.304) and
Jhonnattan Fernandez finished with six kills to aid York in the second contest.
The big match of the day though was the middle match against #14 Hunter (13-7, 10-0 CUNYAC). The Cardinals hoped to avenge their only conference loss of the season but it was not to be as Hunter gave York another conference defeat on Saturday. York kept it close but Hunter pulled away late in each set to earn the three-set victory and stay undefeated in conference play.
The Hawks hit .375 as a team, while holding York to just a .160 hitting percentage. They recorded 41 kills to York's 32 and served up four aces compared to one for York.
The Hawks were led by Eric Barty, who finished with eight kills and seven digs. York had another nice outing from Geffrard, who finished with 13 kills and hit .333.
York will return to action on Thursday when they visit Lehman College at 6:30 p.m.
