York Serves Up 17 Aces and Hits .400 in Three-Set Win over Purchase

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team served up a season-high 17 aces and hit .400 as a team en route to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-17) win over Purchase College in a non-conference contest Thursday evening.
 
The 17 aces for York was they most they've had in a match since February 21st of last year, when they recorded 21 aces in a win over Medgar Evers College.  Their .400 hitting percentage was the second-highest total this season.  The Cardinals hit .525 in their third match of the 2012 season against Yeshiva.
 
Leading the way for York was six-time CUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, Edner Geffrard, who slammed ten kills in only 11 attempts (.909), while also recording seven aces.  Junior Bryan Williams added nine kills (.500) and sophomore Tobi Awopetu chipped in six kills and three digs.  Freshman Glenn Vargas had a match-high 20 assists, while senior Jhonnattan Fernandez finished with five kills (.500) and two blocks.
 
Defensively, York held Purchase to a -.031 hitting percentage on the night, as the Panthers could only muster seven kills. 
 
York, winners of 9 out of its last 11 matches, will host the CUNYAC multi-match this Saturday.  The Cardinals will have a busy day as they will take on Medgar Evers at both 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., while battling Hunter College in-between at 12:00 p.m.
