York Tops Cooper Union, Falls to Rutgers-Newark in Home Opener

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team played a pair of matches Tuesday night in their 2012 home opener. The Cardinals dropped the opening match to Rutgers-Newark University 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-18) before rebounding to take down Cooper Union 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-21).
York offered little resistance against Rutgers-Newark in the opening match. The Cardinals could only muster 17 kills, while surrendering 38 to the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark also served up 12 aces compared to just one for York.
Austin Pappas led all players with 11 kills (.238) for Rutgers-Newark, while Grant Metheny added nine kills. York was led by
Bryan Williams, who finished with six kills.
The Cardinals performed better in the second match, as they registered 36 kills to just 20 for Cooper Union. Williams, along with
Sebastien Francois each led the way with eight kills apiece.
Edner Geffrard, the reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, had five kills, as did
Tobi Awopetu. Setter
Glenn Vargas had 31 assists and five digs and
Kevin Mora had a match-high six digs.
York (4-4) will visit Brooklyn College on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
