John Jay Pulls Away in Final Minutes to Top Women’s Basketball

JAMAICA, N.Y—In what was a close game throughout, John Jay College was able to pull away in the final minutes to hold off the York College women's basketball team by score of 53-45 in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest Wednesday evening.
 
The game was a seesaw battle for most of the first half.  York held an early five-point cushion (8-3) following a free throw by Shadae Rice with just over 16 minutes to play in the first half.   Just a few minutes later, John Jay was up by four-points (12-8) following a 9-0 run.  York eventually took the lead again only to see the Blooudhounds retake the lead once again.  Eventually, John Jay broke a 24-24 tie, scoring the last two buckets before halftime to take a 28-24 cushion.
 
John Jay continued to hold a small lead through most of the second half.  York briefly took the lead back (40-38) following a brief 6-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer by Joanna Josama with 10:22 to play.   That would be the last lead of the game for the Cardinals.  The Bloodhounds went on a 9-2 run to go up 49-42 with 3:59 to play.  Kelly Flowers and Jamecia Forsythe each had four points during the run. 
 
York could not recover from there, and the Bloodhounds would lead by as many as 11 points before finishing the game with an eight-point advantage.
 
York was led by Rice, who had 12 points and five boards.  Shadaea Green and Joanna Josama each had eight points, and Josama also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
 
John Jay was led by Forsythe who had a big game, netting 17 points and grabbing 20 rebounds.  Flowers and Tyana Hale each chipped in ten points.
 
York will host Lehman College on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
