York Falls to Hunter College in Men’s Volleyball

JAMAICA, NY— Despite 17 kills from freshman Ahmed Helmi, the York College men's volleyball team dropped a conference match to Hunter College Tuesday night by a score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-15).
York kept it close in the first two sets but it was all Hunter in the third as the Hawks improved to 15-11, 11-2 in the CUNYAC. York falls to 12-16, and 6-7 in conference play. With one conference game remaining, York will likely need to defeat City Tech on March 15 to secure a home playoff game in the opening round of the CUNYAC Championships. The tournament begins on March 22.
York also got a strong contribution from junior Jhonnattan Fernandez who picked up seven kills with a .600 hitting percentage. Terrence Sutton and Alex Niles each had a team-high five digs.
The Hawks were led by John Gemegah who slammed 13 kills with a .526 hitting percentage. Eric Barty added seven kills and setter Stanley Martinez had 27 assists.
York will return to action on Friday when they host the 7th Annual York College Men's Volleyball Classic. The Cardinals will take on Elmira College at 4:30 p.m. and Elms College at 8:30 p.m. Action will continue on Saturday throughout the day as well.
