York Splits Two Five-Setters; Cardinals Defeat Brooklyn but Fall to CCNY

NEW YORK, NY— The York College men's volleyball team had an eventful day Saturday at the CUNY Athletic Conference multi-match held at CCNY.  It took five sets to decide both of their matches as they fell to CCNY 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-12, 15-7) in the opening match but rebounded to narrowly edge Brooklyn College 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 16-25, 26-24, 16-14).

After the two teams split the opening two sets, York narrowly edged the Beavers in the third (26-24) to take a 2-1 advantage.   York trailed 24-21 in the set but rallied back with five unanswered points.  Alex Niles slammed two kills in a row and Terrence Sutton followed with another to even the score at 24-24.  Niles then added another kill and Ahmed Helmi finished off the set with an ace. 

However, York could not carry that momentum into the fourth set.  CCNY easily won the fourth set by a 13-point margin and then put York away in the fifth and deciding set. 

In defeat, the Cardinals were led by Helmi, who recorded a team-high 15 kills  to go along with four aces and five digs.  Sutton added 12 kills and nine digs, Jhonnatan Fernandez chipped in with 10 kills.  Setter Kenan Kajtezovic had 39 assists.

The Beavers were led by Matthew Ng who finished with a match-high 20 kills.  Nicholas Siriban added 12 kills and Derell Williams had 5 blocks. 

Brooklyn Recap

After losing the first match of the day and falling behind two sets to one to Brooklyn, York managed to pick itself off the mat and rally back to get the key conference win.  York narrowly edged Brooklyn in both the fourth and fifth sets, winning each one by just two points.

Sutton led York with 15 kills to go along with nine digs and two blocks.  Niles added 13 kills and a team-high ten digs, while also blocking four shots and Helmi finished with six kills and five blocks.  Kajtezovic added 43 assists and five digs.

York (12-14, 6-6 CUNYAC) will host Kean University on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
