Late Rallies Help Lehman Sweep York in Men’s Volleyball

Box Score

JAMAICA, NY— Lehman College earned a key conference victory over the York College men's volleyball team Tuesday night, defeating the Cardinals 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-23), thanks in large part to some late-set rallies in the second and third sets.

After Lehman took the first set, York looked to be on the verge of evening up the score when they led 24-20 in the second set.   However, York stumbled from there.  Lehman scored six straight points to earn the improbable second-set victory.  Lehman server Miguel Gallardo served up three aces and benefitted from a kill from teammate R.J. LeBlanc and a pair of attack errors by York.

In the third set, York once again looked like they would force a fourth set after they led 20-16.  However, once again the Lightning rallied to tie the score at 22-22 following a kill by Manuel Bonilla.  The two teams than traded points, before Lehman scored the final two points to clinch the match.

Despite the loss, York (11-13, 5-5 CUNYAC) was led by freshman Ahmed Helmi who recorded 12 kills, five digs and three blocks.  Alex Niles added six kills and six digs and Jhonnattan Fernandez picked up eight kills and four digs.  Setter Kenan Kajtezovic had 22 assists.

The Lightning (9-8, 6-4 CUNYAC) were led by LeBlanc who slammed 12 kills and Gallardo who had five aces and eight digs.

York will return to action on Saturday at the CUNYAC Multi-Match held at CCNY.  York will battle CCNY and Brooklyn College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
