Staten Island Holds On for Win over Lady Cardinals

Box Score

STATEN ISLAND, NY— Four players reached double-figures for the York College women's basketball team but it would not be enough as the College of Staten Island held off several rallies and defeated the Lady Cardinals 71-62 on Monday evening.

Shadae Rice and Elizabeth Padilla each scored 13 points and Joanna Josama recorded a double-double, with ten points and 15 boards to lead York.  Maimouna Dabo also added 11 points and six boards but York was outdone by CSI's Katelyn Hepworth who finished with a game-high 22 points and 20 rebounds.   Allie Shanahan also had a big night for the Dolphins, scoring 21 points and collecting nine boards.

York was always within striking distance and made several runs but every time they got close, Staten Island would pull away again.  The Dolphins held an eight-point advantage (35-27) at the start of the second half but York closed to within one point minutes later when Shayna Smith converted a three-point play to make the score 35-34 with 16:15 to play.  A few minutes later, the Lady Cardinals briefly took a one-point advantage (43-42) following a Padila lay-up.   However, the Dolphins quickly pulled back ahead and eventually took a five-point lead (67-62) following a Shanahan three-pointer with two minutes remaining.

York had a chance to close the lead on its next possession, when they were able to get three cracks at a score thanks to two offensive rebounds.  They could not convert, however, and Staten Island converted two free throws on its next possession to go up by seven points.  York once again could not score on its next possession and the Dolphins sealed the game with 51 seconds left when Hepworth made the final bucket of the night to make the score 71-62.

With the win, CSI improves to 7-14, 5-6 in the CUNYAC, while York drops to 9-13, 6-4 in the CUNYAC.  York will visit Brooklyn this Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
