Lady Cardinals Close Regular Season with Strong Effort Over Hunter

The York College women's basketball team closed out the 2010-11 regular season with an impressive , 82-68, victory over Hunter College Monday night.   With the win, York secures a fifth seed in the upcoming CUNY Athletic Conference Championship and will travel to John Jay College for the opening round on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

York (10-16, 7-6 CUNYAC) came out on fire in the first half, shooting 56 percent from the field and 60 percent from beyond the arc.  Shadae Rice was the catalyst for York as she shot 10-17 from the field in the game, scoring 26 points, grabbing six rebounds and handing out six assists.  Maimouna Dabo and Shayna Smith each scored 14 points apiece and Elizabeth Padilla added 13 points for York. 

The Lady Cardinals also picked up their play on the defensive side of the ball, forcing 25 turnovers and out-rebounding the Hawks by a 47-34 margin. 

The game was never in doubt for York.  After trailing briefly in the early-going (14-13), York would go on a 17-5 run to go up by 11 points (30-19) with 10:32 left before halftime.  From that point on, Hunter (9-17, 6-7 CUNYAC) could barely get within single digits.  York held a double-digit lead for nearly the remainder of the game. 

Despite the loss, Hunter got a game-high 30 points from Kristen Markoe and Nicole Lenard added 13 points for the Hawks who will be the sixth seed in next weekend's tournament.
