York Bounces Brooklyn College in Straight Sets

Box Score

JAMAICA, NY— The York College men's volleyball team earned a straight set, 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 35-33) victory over conference-foe Brooklyn College on Thursday evening.  After an easy first two sets for the Cardinals, York gutted out a hard-fought third set, where they needed 35 points to clinch the match.

The third set was as wild as the score would indicate.  Brooklyn looked like it was on its way to forcing a fourth set after jumping out to an early 9-3 cushion.  York chipped away though, and battled back to tie the game at 17-17 following a Jhonnattan Fernandez kill.   The Bulldogs eventually pulled back ahead, 23-21, after an Alexander Shlivko kill.  After two points by York, Shlivko served up an ace to give the Bulldogs set point.  However, York scored the next two points to get a match-point of its own.  The two teams then went back and forth, fighting off set points until a kill by Kenan Kajtezovic put the Cardinals up 34-33.  On the ensuing point, Brooklyn's David Choy was off target on an attack attempt, hitting the ball out of bounds and giving York the victory.

The Cardinals were led by freshman Ahmed Helmi who slammed 12 kills (.526) and served up five aces.  Senior Alex Niles registered 11 kills (.391) and blocked six shots and Kajtezovic added eight kills and four digs.  Terrence Sutton led all players with seven digs and Scott Luna had a match-high 29 assists.  Fernandez also chipped in with six kill and three blocks. Brooklyn was led by Shlivko who finished with 12 kills.

York improves to 7-5, 3-2 in the CUNYAC and will compete at the Mount Olive College Invitational with two matches on Friday and Saturday.
