SUNYIT Pulls Away in Second Half, Tops Women’s Basketball 72-42

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College women's basketball team held the lead early in the second half but SUNYIT caught fire shortly after and went on to defeat the Cardinals by a score of 72-42 in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

After trailing for the majority of the first half, York came out shooting well to start the second half.  Trailing by six points, Joanna Josama drained a three-pointer and then Shadae Rice connected on a jumper to cut the lead to 26-25.  Following another defensive stop for York, Josama connected on another three-pointer to give York a 28-26 advantage; its first lead since the score was 4-2 in the opening minutes.

The lead would be short-lived, as SUNYIT took control of the game from there.  After tying the game at 30-30 with 16:23 to play, the Wildcats instituted a full-court press and York had difficulty adjusting.  SUNYIT outscored York 42-12 for the remainder of the game, which resulted in the lopsided score.

SUNYIT forced 31 turnovers, while only committing 13.  They converted those turnovers into 31 points, while holding York to just six points off turnovers.  SUNYIT also dominated down low, scoring 28 points in the paint, compared to just eight for York.

SUNYIT (3-1) was led by Lyndsey Brognano, who had a game-high 24 points to go along with five boards.  Nailah Cherry added 12 points and eight rebounds and Kayla McNeil added 12 points and seven rebounds.

York was led by Shadae Rice, who contributed 13 points and six boards.  Vania St. Louis and Josama each netted eight points apiece.

York (0-8) will visit William Paterson on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
