Second Half Run Leads Mary Baldwin over York

HARRISONBURG, V.A.—An 18-4 run midway through the second half helped Mary Baldwin overcome a halftime deficit and defeat the York College women's basketball team, 61-53, at the Eastern Mennonite University Tip-Off Classic on Friday evening.   
 
The Cardinals took a two-point lead going into the locker room after trailing by ten points midway thought the opening half.  Trailing 26-16 with 4:04 left in the first half, York exploded for a 12-0 run to take a 28-26 advantage going into the locker room.  Vanessa Rivera opened the run with a three-point basket and then the Cardinals added the next five points on made free throws to cut the deficit to two points (26-24) with 2:04 left to play before halftime.  York then tied the game with a lay-up by Danielle Dunn with 40 seconds remaining and then took the lead on another lay-up by Shadae Rice with six seconds left in the half. 
 
York held onto the lead for the opening minutes of the second half but Mary Baldwin tied the game at 34-34 after a three-pointer by Sabrina Desper at the 16:44 mark. 
 
Later in the half, with York trailing 40-38, Mary Baldwin went on a pivotal 9-0 run capped off by a Desper lay-up which made the score 49-38 with 10:27 to play.  York could not get closer than six points in the remaining ten minutes. 
 
The Cardinals were led by Rice, who finished with 15 points, and by Shadaea Green who netted 12 points and four rebounds.  Dunn had a solid all-around game, netting eight points, while also pulling down eight rebounds and Rivera finished with nine points, with all her points coming on three-point baskets. 
 
Mary Baldwin was led by Desper who finished with a game-high 25 points on 10-18 shooting.  Shamanda Washington and Meagan Barron each added ten points as they improved to 2-0 on the season. 
 
York (0-2) will take on Eastern Mennonite on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.  Live stats and streaming video are available.
