Men’s Volleyball Wins Five-Setter over Polytechnic

JAMAICA, NY— The York College men's volleyball team held off a rally from Polytechnic Institute of NYU and went on to defeat the Fighting Blue Jays by a score of 3-2 (25-13, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-9) on Monday evening.

Three of York's players came up big for York, recording 10 or more kills.  Alex Niles led the way, slamming a match-high 18 kills, while also blocking four shots.  Ahmed Helmi added 15 kills and Jhonnatan Fernandez put away 10 kills and had a match-high six blocks.  In addition, Terrence Sutton recorded a team-high 11 digs, while also registering eight kills and setter Kenan Kajtezovic had 48 assists.

York held a 2-1 advantage after four sets but Polytechnic put together its strongest set of the match in the fourth.  With the score tied at 8-8, the Fighting Blue Jays rolled off eight straight points to take a commanding 16-8 lead in the set.   They would go on to take the set 25-19 and force a deciding set.

However, the Cardinals stepped up their play in the fifth set thanks to some strong play from Fernandez and Niles.  The two combined for four blocks in the set and put the game away for York, who improved to 2-2 with the victory.  Polytechnic dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

York will return to action on Thursday when they host New Jersey City University at 7:00 p.m.
