Lady Cardinals Drop First Conference Game of Season
Box Score
NEW YORK, NY– The York College women's basketball team failed to keep its perfect conference record intact, falling to John Jay College 74-69 Wednesday evening. The loss drops York's record to 7-8, 4-1 in the CUNY Athletic Conference.
The Bloodhounds controlled most of the contest, leading from the 6:43 mark of the first half. The Lady Cardinals looked to be on their way to another victory in the early going, when they jumped out to an 11-5 advantage following a three-pointer by Latanya Grady. The lead would be short-lived as the Bloodhound responded with an 8-2 run to even the score at 13-13 with 11:02 to play in the first half.
Five minutes later, after trailing 20-19, John Jay went on 14-3 run to take a ten-point advantage (33-23) with 4:26 to play in the half. The key part of the run came when Dominique Grice converted a three-point play and Allana Beddoe followed with a three-pointer on the Bloodhounds next possession, giving John Jay a quick six points. John Jay would eventually take an eight-point lead (35-27) going into the locker room.
In the second half, John Jay saw its lead balloon to as many as 14 points, following a three-point play by Jessica Lirio with 5:34 to play. The Bloodhounds appeared to have the game in hand at that point but York had one rally left. With just over two minutes remaining, York cut a ten-point John Jay advantage to just three points, thanks to a flurry of points from Shadae Rice.
After York's Elizabeth Padilla drained a jumper to cut the lead to eight points (69-61), York forced a turnover and Rice hit a lay-up to cut the lead to six points. The Lady Cardinals then came up with a steal and Rice drained a shot from beyond the arc to make it a three-point game (69-66).
John Jay's Chantelle Smith responded with a made jumper of her own to put the Bloodhounds up by five, but Rice came right back to nail another shot to make the score 71-68 with 43 seconds to play. However, York fouled John Jay on its next possession despite having enough time remaining on the clock to get another possession. Grice hit both free throws and iced the game for the Bloodhounds.
Despite the loss, Rice scored a season-high 26 points to go along with six boards and three steals. Maimouna Dabo added 14 points and six rebounds and Elizabeth Padilla netted 12 points. John Jay (6-9, 4-2 CUNYAC) was led by Grice, who finished with 19 points and ten rebounds. Jamecia Forsythe added 18 points and 17 rebounds.
York will battle Lehman College this Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
