John Jay Nips Women’s Swimming in Final Event
JAMAICA, NY— It came down to the final event of the night to decide who would win the women's swim meet between John Jay College and York College on Monday evening, and it was the Bloodhounds who came out on top, narrowly edging the Lady Cardinals by a score 98-89.
The Bloodhounds held a narrow 87-85 lead over York going into the final event of the night: the 200-meter freestyle relay. John Jay was able to beat York in the relay and get the victory.
York started off the meet strong, with Ayanna Bennett, Averie Mohammed, Chrisviany Delarosa and Jennifer Castillo teaming up to win the 200-meter medley relay. After John Jay took the next two events, Bennett touched the wall first in the 50-meter freestyle and Mohammed won both the 200-meter IM and the 100-meter butterfly to put York in front. Bennett would later add a victory in the 100-meter backstroke and Delarosa bested the field in the 100-meter breaststroke. But the Bloodhounds would add victories in the 100-meter freestyle and the 400-freestyle to re-take the lead before the final event.
York (2-8, 0-5 CUNYAC) will return to action on January 18th when they visit Lehman College at 6:00 p.m.
